Friday Night Self Care Routine

Originally written January 28, 2020

Self care has become such a trend in 2019 and has continued into 2020. More people have become open to talking about their mental health, creating more discussion about well-being and helped spark this self-care “revolution.” A study by the Pew Research Center showed that millenials are the generation that focus on self care more than any generation before them, and they spend twice as much as boomers on self-care essentials and products (this includes therapy, life coaching, diet plans, etc.) I personally think it’s important to prioritize your mental health and general well being, and I don’t think our country puts enough value into this, so I hope this is a fad that is here to stay.

After a long week of working retail, I like to indulge in a little me-time and self care on Fridays. Here is an example of a typical Friday night self care routine.

1. Spa Time

I like to start with a spa portion to get me relaxed and in the self-care mood. I like focusing on my feet because they work hard on a daily basis and I don’t really give them much love or attention. Usually I will do a foot scrub with a foot bar from LUSH and then follow it up with a foot lotion. I like to do a hand scrub as well and moisturize because they also need love. Then I paint my nails because I love changing up my nail color. Then I move onto my face- I like to start by wiping down my face with micellar water and then I do a charcoal mask to deep clean and detoxify. Once I wipe that off my face I will roll out my skin with a jade roller (I love using this on my eyebrows, it feels like a massage).

2. Setting the Atmosphere

I usually do spa stuff in my bathroom and then move into my room for the next phase of my self care evening. To set the mood, I like to turn off all my lights except the little lamp on my nightstand and light a candle.

3. Relaxing

Next I just want to lay in bed and relax so I will turn on a really good movie or TV show and watch that while I do a sheet mask. Sometimes I will also call a friend during this time to quickly chat and catch up.

4. Bed Time

Go to bed at a reasonable time. During my self care nights I make sure I am treating my body right by getting enough sleep, so I try to make sure I don’t go to bed too late.

5. The Next Morning

Let your self care night continue into the morning and have a good start to your day! My favorite way to start a Saturday morning is by going to a pilates class. I always look forward to it, so I make sure I book a spot in a class for the next morning at a reasonable time (so that I'm not rushing to get there). When I come back from pilates I love to make myself a big breakfast. And that concludes my little friday - saturday self care routine!

To give you some inspiration for your own self care nights, here are some other things I like to do for self care:

  • Do art (collaging usually)

  • Go for a drive

  • Spend time with my family (if i can)

  • Eating food i like

  • Watching my favorite YouTubers

  • Journaling
